Patriotic July 4th pinwheel craft kids activity | One Mama's Daily Drama

Happy Independence Day, America! July 4th crafts and treats are the perfect way to celebrate with family. My kids – Sniffles(9) and Lil’ Wheezy(6) – love a good party. They helped me come up with several fun activities to do at home. They also made sure I made a sweet treat to finish the day. Our favorite part of the holiday was definitely making this July 4th pinwheel craft.

My kids confessed to me that they are actually afraid of sparklers. I recently read a statistic that said not only are the majority of July 4th injuries firework-related, but most of them are kids. And most of those are about the age of my kids. And most of those kids get burned in the face by a sparkler. Yikes! These pinwheels that we made together are safe and just darn cute.

July 4th pinwheel supplies

  • Square paper in red, white, and/or blue
  • Stapler
  • Pushpin
  • Pencil with a good eraser
  • Ribbon (optional)

This craft is easy for this kids to do mostly on their own. I couldn’t find an unsharpened pencil or one with an eraser, so we just went with skewers. They were not nearly as sturdy, so pencils are definitely the better choice if you have them. I also used 12 inch square scrapbook paper, but you could cut it smaller. Card stock would also work well.

Fold your paper in half diagonally, twice. You should have a big X of creases.

Cut up each corner just over half way.

Fold every other point into the middle and staple in place.

Push a pushpin through the middle of your paper, out the back and into your pencil eraser or skewer. {You might want to do this part yourself.}

For extra embellishment, tie a few lengths of ribbon around the handle.

The kids were excited to try them out. The ceiling fan moved them while we were making them, which caused lots of giggles. If you are up for a messier craft, I really like this fireworks painting project from Juggling With Kids. All you need it paint, paper and pipe cleaners.

July 4th fun

After we made the July 4th pinwheels, we decorated the house in red, white, and blue. Lil’ Wheezy cut out paper stars to tape on the wall. Sniffles designed a Go Fish card game and made it all by herself. And of course, we had to finish the day with a treat. I made brownies, frosted them with cream cheese, and topped them with fruit.
